Janet E. Stout, PhD

Dr. Janet Emily Stout is president and director of Special Pathogens Laboratory and research associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. A clinical and environmental microbiologist, she is internationally recognized for pioneering research in Legionella. Dr. Stout has authored more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals, as well as textbook chapters on Legionella and  Legionnaires’ disease. Her expertise includes detection, control, remediation and prevention strategies for Legionnaires’ disease. An advocate for prevention for more than 30 years, Dr. Stout assisted in developing both the first U. S. Legionella guideline  (1993), modeled by national and global health agencies and organizations, and the first U. S. Legionella standard (2015), as a member of the ASHRAE Standard Project Committee 188.
